4-course menu at Saji in City Center – Your next taste of Indonesia starts with a trip to Studiestræde, and the five-heart review in Politiken says it’s well worth it
With shoutouts from a host of fellow chefs and five hearts in Politiken, Saji is the kick of Indonesian spice Copenhagen didn’t know it needed. While the name is shorthand for the owners' first names, Samuel and Jimmy, it also means ‘to proudly present’, and these guys definitely do that in spades. After becoming friends in culinary school back home in Indonesia nearly 14 years ago, the pair also worked together at the likes of Kiin Kiin before they decided to open a place of their own. At Saji, their vibrant made-from-scratch dishes take you on a trip from coast to coast and across Indonesia’s many islands, opening your eyes to a cuisine that will surely captivate your taste buds.
WHAT YOU GET
Enjoy a 4-course menu at Saji. The menu is chef’s choice, so dishes rotate regularly and reflect the best produce of the season. Start with Dendeng Rusa, a Sumatra-style spiced jerky made in-house with local deer and served with crispy rice chips. Have handmade Siomay Udang shrimp dumplings with an umami-packed peanut sauce and fresh spring onion. Taste Ayam Woku, a rich and slightly spicy Sulawesi stew with free-range chicken, lots of aromatics, and steamed jasmine rice. For dessert, delight in Kembang Goyang, an indulgent black sticky rice ice cream paired with banana pudding and sesame tuile.

For the Indonesian expats in Copenhagen, this place tastes of home, but even Politiken’s Danish reviewer remarked, ‘the host and the food made us feel at home in another world.’ Chef-owners Samuel Tobing and Jimmy Orlando will tell you the traditional Indonesian mix of spicy aromatics called ‘bumbu’ is at the heart of it all, but really, it’s their warm and service-minded spirit that brings Saji to life. They’ve found their sweet spot in the kitchen, cooking regional Indonesian dishes with seasonal Nordic ingredients. Striking a unique balance between fun, familiar, and excitingly exotic, Saji is a one-of-a-kind experience that tops the charts for Indonesian restaurants outside of Southeast Asia.
